October Daye reading order
By Seanan McGuire · Last verified · 5 sources
Quick answer
Read the twenty novels in number order from Rosemary and Rue. For the short fiction, Seanan McGuire's own site says which novel each story is best read after; that author order places 28 works. Several novels were printed with a bonus story, so which edition you own matters.
Urban fantasy series of 20 numbered novels (DAW through 2023, Tor from 2025) plus short fiction, several pieces of which were bundled as bonus stories inside novel editions.
- The series has 20 novels, 11 other works, 2 novelettes, 1 novella.
- In publication order, the main sequence starts with Rosemary and Rue (2009) and the latest listed is A Divided Duty (2026).
- Besides publication order, this page offers: Author's suggested reading placement; Internal chronology (partial).

Why the order isn't simple
- Short fiction appeared in anthologies, as free downloads on the author's site, on Patreon, as an e-original, and bundled inside novels.
- Some bonus stories are edition-specific (Never Shines the Sun is print-only), others are in all editions.
- Several stories are historical prequels set long before the first novel.
Which order should I use?
Publication order follows the novels' release dates.
The author-recommended order is Seanan McGuire's 'best read after' guidance. The partial chronology uses only the stories whose in-world timing her site states, up to The Winter Long.
Where each order comes from
- Publication order — Derived from publication dates
- Ordered by first publication date (original language). Derived automatically from the dates listed for each work.
- Author's suggested reading placement — Author / publisher recommended
- Novels in number order, with short fiction inserted where the author's site says it is 'best read after' a given book. Stories without a stated placement are left out. Source: Seanan McGuire: The October Daye Books, Seanan McGuire: Toby Short Stories.
- Internal chronology (partial) — Story chronology
- Only works whose in-world timing the author's site states; the main novels are in sequence (each listed as sequel to the previous). Later works are not placed. Source: Seanan McGuire: The October Daye Books, Seanan McGuire: Toby Short Stories, Chimes at Midnight (book page).
Novellas & short stories
Many October Daye stories were published online or as bonus content; where the author's two pages disagree on placement (Heaps of Pearl), both are shown in the conflicts section.
Fourteen shorter works are listed. Two (In Sea-Salt Tears and Rat-Catcher) are novelettes by their Hugo award category and one (Of Things Unknown) is called a novella by the author; for the rest the author's site gives no length, so they are typed 'other' rather than guessed.
| Title | Type | First published | Notes |

| Of Things Unknown | Novella | 5 September 2017 in The Brightest Fell | Included in all editions of The Brightest Fell per author's site. |
Collections & omnibus editions: what's inside
Six novel editions are listed as containing a bonus story or novella. The checker lets you tick the edition you own; for Once Broken Faith the author's pages disagree on which editions include the bonus.
The bonus stories appear only in specific editions: for Chimes at Midnight the author lists the print edition; for The Brightest Fell, Night and Silence, The Unkindest Tide and A Killing Frost, all editions. No bonus content is listed for book 15 onward, which means unverified, not absent.
Contents below are works from this series only. Tick the editions you own to check for duplicates and gaps.

Where sources disagree
We don't pick a winner silently. When sources conflict we show each view and cite it.
Heaps of Pearl placement
The series page says best read any time after One Salt Sea; the short-fiction page says best read after The Winter Long because of relationship spoilers through book eight. We use the later placement and show both.
Sources: Seanan McGuire: The October Daye Books, Seanan McGuire: Toby Short Stories
Dreams and Slumbers editions
The series page says it is in all editions of Once Broken Faith; the short-fiction page says it was originally published in the print edition. Edition coverage unresolved.
Sources: Seanan McGuire: The October Daye Books, Seanan McGuire: Toby Short Stories
Bonus stories in books 15 onward
The author's site lists no bonus stories for When Sorrows Come or later novels; any bonus content in those editions was not verified and is not listed.
Novel count
The author's series page says 'the first nineteen books' are available while listing twenty titles, the twentieth (A Divided Duty) dated 2026-09-29.
