Vorkosigan Saga reading order
By Lois McMaster Bujold · Last verified · 5 sources
Quick answer
Follow Lois McMaster Bujold's own reading-order guide (2025): it is mostly internal chronological order, starting with the Cordelia books, with a few deliberate adjustments such as reading Falling Free later. Most novellas are bundled into Baen omnibuses, so check which omnibus you own before buying single titles.
Space-opera novels and novellas, most centered on the Vorkosigan family of Barrayar, written out of internal order and repackaged in Baen omnibuses.
- The series has 1 novelette, 16 novels, 1 short story, 6 novellas.
- In publication order, the main sequence starts with Shards of Honor (1986) and the latest listed is The Flowers of Vashnoi (2018).

Not placed in this order
Our sources do not give a position for these works in this order, so we do not guess one.
- Weatherman
Why the order isn't simple
- Books were written out of internal chronological order.
- Falling Free is set about 200 years earlier with no shared characters, and Bujold places it late in her reading order rather than first.
- The Borders of Infinity is both a novella and the title of a three-novella collection with a frame story.
- Omnibuses regroup works, and Labyrinth appears in more than one.
Which order should I use?
Publication order mixes eras: Shards of Honor (1986) is early in the timeline, while Falling Free (1988) is set about two centuries earlier.
Bujold's guide is the author's recommendation and places all but two works. It differs from strict chronology mainly in moving Falling Free near Diplomatic Immunity.
The internal chronology here is a secondary timeline (Wikipedia, cross-checked with Dendarii.com) and is shown for comparison only.

Baen's omnibuses each pair novels with novellas: for example Young Miles holds The Warrior's Apprentice, The Mountains of Mourning and The Vor Game. 'Borders of Infinity' is both a novella and the title of a collection containing it — the two are listed separately.
