Outlander reading order
By Diana Gabaldon · Last verified · 6 sources
Quick answer
Read the nine main novels in publication order — the author explicitly recommends starting with Outlander and going on in order. The author says the Lord John books and the shorter novellas can be read on their own; if you want them in story sequence, switch to the author's chronology, which slots most of them inside the middle of Voyager.
Nine published main novels, a Lord John Grey sub-series of three novels and six novellas, and several shorter 'bulge' stories that fill gaps in the main timeline.
- The series has 12 novels, 9 novellas, 1 short story.
- In publication order, the main sequence starts with Outlander (1991) and the latest listed is Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (2021).
- Besides publication order, this page offers: Chronology (author's official list).

Why the order isn't simple
- The Lord John novels and most Lord John novellas take place inside a single time gap in the middle of Voyager (1756-1761), so a chronological reader pauses book three to read them.
- Most novellas first appeared in multi-author anthologies (Past Poisons, Legends II, Warriors, Dangerous Women and others) before being collected, so the same story can sit in three different books.
- Two collections gather the short works — Lord John and the Hand of Devils and Seven Stones to Stand or Fall — and neither contains everything.
- One short story, A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, is set during the Second World War but is placed by the author after book eight.
- The UK edition of the first novel was titled Cross Stitch.
Which order should I use?
Publication order is simply the order the books came out. For the nine main novels it is the same as their numbering, and the author's site recommends it for the main series.
The chronology view is Diana Gabaldon's own list. It places every Lord John novel and novella, and the 'bulge' stories, by the years they cover. In this view a run of Lord John books set in 1756-1762 appears between Voyager and Drums of Autumn, matching the author's note that they fill a gap within Voyager's timeline.
Because the author calls the main novels sequential and the shorter works independent, a common practical approach is to follow publication order for the novels and add the short works whenever you like — the tracker's 'Main sequence only' option shows just the novels in both views.
Where each order comes from
- Publication order — Derived from publication dates
- Ordered by first publication date (original language). Derived automatically from the dates listed for each work.
- Chronology (author's official list) — Story chronology
- Diana Gabaldon's own chronology of the series, which interleaves the main novels, the Lord John books and the shorter 'bulge' stories by the in-story period they cover. The author notes that the main novels should be read in order but the shorter works can be read alone. Source: Chronology of the Outlander Series.
Novellas & short stories
Of the nine short works listed here, six were first printed in multi-author anthologies and three (Lord John and the Haunted Soldier, A Fugitive Green and Besieged) first appeared in the author's own collections.
Every short work except the three in Lord John and the Hand of Devils is now in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall, so a reader buying that one collection gets seven of the nine.

Collections & omnibus editions: what's inside
Lord John and the Hand of Devils (2007) holds the three earliest Lord John novellas. Seven Stones to Stand or Fall (2017) holds the remaining seven short works. The two collections do not overlap, so together they cover all nine.
The anthologies where the stories first appeared (Warriors, Dangerous Women and others) are multi-author books and are not listed as editions here.
Contents below are works from this series only. Tick the editions you own to check for duplicates and gaps.

About the sub-series
Lord John Grey is the only sub-series with its own novels. The author describes it as part of the series rather than a spin-off, readable after Voyager or on its own.
Where sources disagree
We don't pick a winner silently. When sources conflict we show each view and cite it.
Voyager and Drums of Autumn first-publication years
Wikipedia gives 1993 and 1996 in one place and 1994 and 1997 in another. Library catalogue records list first editions in 1994 and 1997, which we show.

Contents of Seven Stones to Stand or Fall
The author's chronology names seven works as appearing in Seven Stones (including A Fugitive Green and Besieged). One library catalogue description instead lists a story called 'Survival' and omits A Fugitive Green. We follow the author's page.

How this page was verified
The order of works, the collection each short work belongs to, and the reading advice come from the author's official site (series page and chronology page).
Book years come from library catalogue records; The Scottish Prisoner's exact date is from Kirkus Reviews and library records. First venues of the novellas are from Wikipedia, because the author's anthology-by-anthology list was not yet published when we checked — these are marked as secondary.
The tenth novel, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, is announced but unpublished, so it is not listed.
