Liaden Universe reading order
By Sharon Lee & Steve Miller · Last verified · 3 sources
Quick answer
There is no single 'book one'. The authors name ten novels that need no prior reading, group the rest into short arcs (for example the Theo Waitley books or the Jethri Gobelyn trade books), and publish both a written order and a story-time order. Pick an entry point, then follow that arc; switch to the chronology view if you want events in sequence.
A space-opera universe of 27 novels by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, written out of story order over more than thirty years and organised by the authors into overlapping character arcs rather than numbered books.
- The series has 27 novels.
- In publication order, the main sequence starts with Agent of Change (1988) and the latest listed is Diviner's Bow (2025).
- Besides publication order, this page offers: Internal chronology (authors' list).

Why the order isn't simple
- The authors state there is no fixed progression from book one onward; several novels are designed as entry points.
- Publication order and story order diverge sharply: the two Crystal novels, written in 2005-2006, are the earliest events, while the first published novel, Agent of Change (1988), sits in the middle of the timeline.
- Eight later novels are flagged by the authors as partly happening at the same time, so even the official chronology is not strictly linear.
- Two novels, Local Custom and Scout's Progress, were first published only inside an omnibus (Pilots Choice, 2001).
- The same novels were reissued in at least eight different omnibus editions with unrelated titles, so owning one omnibus can mean owning parts of three others.
Which order should I use?
Publication order on this page follows the first-publication dates on the authors' publication list. It is the same sequence as the authors' own 'written order' list.
Internal chronology is the authors' story-time list. It starts about a thousand years before the first published book (the Crystal duology), so a reader using it meets the newest-written prehistory first.
The arcs (sub-series filter) come from the authors' list of direct sequels. Several novels belong to two arcs, which is why the filter can show the same book under, for example, both The Dutiful Passage and Padi yos'Galan.
Where each order comes from
- Publication order — Derived from publication dates
- Ordered by first publication date (original language). Derived automatically from the dates listed for each work.
- Internal chronology (authors' list) — Story chronology
- The authors' own list of the novels in story-time order. Eight consecutive novels are marked by the authors as having portions that happen at the same time; the list still gives them a sequence. Source: Correct Reading Order.
Collections & omnibus editions: what's inside
Most Liaden omnibuses are re-packagings of the same early novels. Agent of Change appears in Partners in Necessity, Korval's Legacy and The Agent Gambit; Local Custom and Scout's Progress appear in Pilots Choice, The Dragon Variation, and (Scout's Progress only) Phase Change.
Pilots Choice is the only omnibus that is also a first edition: the two novels inside it were not published separately first.
Use the ownership checker below: ticking Korval's Legacy and The Agent Gambit, for instance, shows The Agent Gambit adds nothing new.
Contents below are works from this series only. Tick the editions you own to check for duplicates and gaps.

About the sub-series
The authors describe eight internal arcs. They are not separately numbered series, and later books join arcs together (the Theo Waitley arc rejoins the main Korval story in Neogenesis).
Where sources disagree
We don't pick a winner silently. When sources conflict we show each view and cite it.
Simultaneous novels in the chronology
The authors' internal chronology lists Necessity's Child through Trader's Leap in sequence but notes that portions of these novels occur simultaneously. We keep the authors' sequence and mark each of these entries instead of inventing a finer order.

Written order vs first-publication dates
The authors' 'written order' list matches the first-publication dates on their publication list, including Local Custom and Scout's Progress appearing between Plan B and I Dare because of the 2001 omnibus.

How this page was verified
Everything here comes from the authors' own site, korval.com: the publication list (dates and publishers), the reading-order page (entry points, arcs, written order and internal chronology) and the 'Which Book is Which' page (omnibus contents).
Omnibus publication dates are not given on those pages except for Pilots Choice, so they are left blank rather than taken from retail listings. Short fiction (chapbooks and story collections) is not yet included.
Last verified . Every work cites an author or publisher source.
